Philosophy:
I love hissing, crackling, warping, obscured, submerged sounds and noises that sound like pieces of songs you heard driving by someone's house in the summer 17 years ago. I shoot for sounds that would match bird-watching, sun rising, or slow-motion skateboarding at the end of the day.
Additionally, I'm not pretending any of this is new or groundbreaking or artistic. I don't claim any mystical properties or influences. I don't fetishize format, technique, or equipment. This is mostly for myself, but if someone else enjoys it, that's great.
Relevant Musical Timeline:
1976: My dad's thrashed Dick Dale and the Del-Tones, hot rod music, Herb Albert, and Brasil '66 records on the Radio Shack turntable. Ravel's Bolero.
1984: Unopened copy of "Purple Rain" found on the side of the road. 6th grade.
1985: Black Flag "Damaged," Minor Threat, Subhumans, DRI, COC, FOD. And "Anthrax," the only song I liked on Gang of Four's "Entertainment."
1990: Fugazi "Repeater," Unrest "Kustom Karnal Blackxploitation."
1991: My Bloody Valentine "Loveless."
1992: Bartered one shoebox full of dentures found in sewer for a Gremlin electric guitar and Pignose amp. Feedback revealed. Four-track recorder procured. Discovered joys of flipping tape over and listening to everything backwards.
1995: FSA's "Further" and Brian Eno's "Thursday Afternoon."
1998: Reverb discovered then rejected. Washing-machine sound captured.
2006: Reverb rediscovered and figured out. Discovery of pedals that purposely wreck tone.
2007: Figured out how to finally start to make the sounds in my head.
2008: Discovery of "Change Speed" function.
2009: Purchase of "bamboo-pattern" shower curtain.
